Do We Need More Words?

Thanks to Barb and Terri, one of the wonderful sister acts on the CI team, we now know the 2009 Word of the Year.

I don't think it's a word, but I'm not a dictionary.

P.S. Chronicle Books has an interesting list of dictionaries. (Hmmm. I'm starting to think this mentioning Chronicle Books every day may work out better for them than it does for me ...)

"Unfriend"? More verbifying. Nothing left now but to car downtown, camera a few things and then computer them. Yikes.

Never a fan of "verbifying", and I know that "friend" is already a word, but they could have at least gone positive and declared a verbified "friend" as the word of the year.

Further, it's not called the 2009 NEW word of the year, so an existing word could be the word of the year. Interesting that Oxford wasn't specific on this point.

Why not a word of the year and a new word of the year. The word of the year could then be reserved for a popular or reborn existing word, like "hope", "change" or perhaps even "peace".

I'd vote for "hope" for the word of the year!

Big Bunny and Chris: I always enjoy your take on things. I'm going to go turkey now.
